Sana Arif becomes Pakistan’s triathlon trailblazer

Sana Arif has made history as Pakistan’s first-ever international triathlete, inspiring millions with her perseverance and passion. Hailing from Lahore and currently based in Kuwait, her incredible story reflects strength, courage, and the will to overcome challenges.

Sana’s interest in triathlons began after hearing about an American athlete honoring his late friends by completing an Ironman race. Despite her fear of swimming in open water, Sana learned to swim in 2021 with support from her siblings and friends. Within two years, she achieved an incredible feat by competing in Ironman 70.3 in Turkey, which involves a 1.9 km swim, 90 km cycling, and a 21.1 km run.

Her rigorous training often began at 4 am to beat Kuwait’s intense heat, with her family’s encouragement as her strongest motivator. While representing Pakistan internationally fills her with pride, she also faces challenges, including limited national support for triathletes and the high costs of competing.

Sana advocates for greater financial backing from the government and sponsors to help aspiring athletes in Pakistan take part in endurance sports. She is proof of how discipline, family support, and unwavering determination can break barriers. Her advice for others? Start small, stay consistent, and find a solid support network.
