Rohit Sharma ends test cricket journey

Indian Test cricket captain Rohit Sharma has called time on his red-ball career at 38. Announcing his decision on Instagram, he expressed gratitude for the chance to represent India in Test matches and confirmed his focus on playing ODIs moving forward.

During his 67 Test matches, Rohit scored 4,301 runs, the highest of which was 212 against South Africa in 2019. He registered 12 centuries and maintained an average exceeding 40. Leading the team in 24 Test games, he achieved 12 victories, nine defeats, and three draws. It wasn’t until 2019, after a mid-career transition to opening batting, that Rohit truly excelled in Test cricket, cementing his place in the format.

The BCCI lauded Rohit’s contributions and stated that a new Test captain would soon take charge. His final Test was during India’s 2024 series in Australia. Despite a string of challenging performances in the latter stages of his career, fans fondly recall his innings against England and South Africa as major highlights.

While he ends his Test career, Rohit remains active in the IPL, representing the Mumbai Indians, and is set to continue contributing to Indian cricket through ODIs. His retirement reflects the close of an era defined by remarkable achievements and steady leadership.
