No La Niña or El Niño; Winter in Pakistan Normal

Karachi (Pakistan News): El Niño and La Niña are oceanic climate phenomena in the Pacific Ocean that, despite being thousands of miles away, can influence extreme heat, severe cold, droughts, and floods in Pakistan. El Niño indicates warmer ocean temperatures, while La Niña signifies cooler seas.

Recently, social media users linked the current wave of cold and snowfall in Karachi and across Pakistan to the activation of La Niña. However, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has denied this connection.

Deputy Director and spokesperson Anjum Nazir Zigham stated that the current cold spell is neither unusual nor related to La Niña, and that weather conditions in the country are normal. He advised the public to remain cautious and obtain information from reliable sources.

Experts noted that an active La Niña during winter blocks rainfall pathways, and recent rains indicate that La Niña is currently weak. Pakistan is among the countries highly sensitive to minor global climate changes, and phenomena originating in the Pacific Ocean can still directly impact the country.
