Islamabad (Pakistan News) The National Assembly has approved the Elections Act 2017 Amendment Bill, making the Elections (Amendment) Act 2026 immediately enforceable. The bill, presented by MNA Shazia Marri, amends Sections 9, 66, 104, 104A, 138, 155, 202, 212, and 232, replacing the jurisdiction of the “Supreme Court” with the “Federal Constitutional Court” in various matters.
Under the amendment, the Speaker of the National Assembly or the Chairman of the Senate may withhold the public disclosure of members’ assets in cases of personal security or safety risks, with assets remaining confidential for up to one year. However, full and accurate details must still be submitted confidentially to the Election Commission.
The bill emphasizes balancing transparency and fundamental rights, ensuring members’ assets and liabilities are available for accountability while protecting the security of members and their families from unnecessary disclosure.
During the session, other bills were also presented, including the CrPC (Amendment) Bill 2026, Constitutional Amendment Bill on the removal of reserved women seats, Constitution (Amendment) Bill 2026, and Fatima University for Science and Technology Bill 2025.
Opposition members raised objections to the bill, but Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar clarified that constitutional matters and appeals will now fall under the jurisdiction of the Federal Constitutional Court, and Election Commission decisions will be reviewed by the constitutional court.
