Islamabad (Pakistan News): The appointment of Mahmood Achakzai as the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly has seemingly ended a five-month-long political deadlock. The timing of the decision is significant, as PTI protests are set to begin on February 8.
National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq issued the notification unexpectedly, despite earlier refusing to consider PTI’s request in October. Political circles suggest that Achakzai’s appointment was influenced by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, though Speaker Sadiq denied this, stating that he made the decision independently and had full authority from Nawaz Sharif.
Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar told a private TV channel that all party decisions are made in consultation with Nawaz Sharif, who retains final authority.
The move is seen as an important step to strengthen the opposition’s presence in parliamentary proceedings.
