Lahore (Pakistan News): The Lahore High Court held a hearing on a petition seeking to ban social media use for children under 16 years of age. The petition was filed by 8th-grade student Alaya Saleem through her lawyer Shiza Qureshi.
During the hearing, Chief Justice Ms. Aalia Neelum directed the federal government, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), and other relevant authorities to submit a response within one week, emphasizing that the matter requires urgent attention.
The petition argued that social media negatively affects children’s mental, moral, and educational development, and that it is the state’s responsibility to protect children’s fundamental rights.
It further highlighted that platforms like TikTok and other social media sites are having detrimental effects on young children’s psychology. The petition requested that a ban on social media use for children under 16 be imposed.
