Islamabad (Pakistan News) The Islamabad High Court has issued notices to the federal government and the Election Commission regarding a petition challenging the presidential ordinance and the postponement of local government elections in the federal capital. The court has consolidated this petition with a similar case filed by Jamaat-e-Islami.
During the hearing of the petition filed by the Central Muslim League, Justice Mohammad Azam Khan heard arguments with petitioner Inam-ur-Rehman Kamboh present along with his lawyer, Ashfaq Ahmed Kharl. The lawyer argued that the presidential ordinance challenging the Local Government Act should be reviewed and that conducting the elections should be the Election Commission’s top priority.
The petitioner’s counsel further stated that despite the schedule being announced, nomination papers submitted, and all legal requirements met, the elections were postponed. He requested the court to annul the presidential ordinance and order the holding of local elections in Islamabad.
The court has sought replies from the federal government and the Election Commission and has adjourned the hearing until January 27.
