Islamabad (Pakistan News): The Higher Education Commission (HEC) continues to operate on an adhoc basis as the appointment of its permanent chairman remains unresolved six months after the previous chairman’s term ended.
According to Ministry of Education sources, Secretary Naeem Mehmood is currently serving as acting chairman. A summary recommending a permanent appointment was submitted to the Prime Minister, but no decision has been made yet.
The term of former HEC Chairman Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed ended on July 30, 2025, leaving the institution without a permanent leader. Initially, Naeem Mehmood was given additional responsibilities for three months, but six months later, a permanent chairman has still not been appointed.
Sources revealed that 750 applications were received for the position. International candidates were initially considered, but due to lack of overseas incentives, the shortlist was limited to local vice chancellors and bureaucrats.
