Islamabad (Pakistan News): Federal Energy Minister Owais Laghari has stated that providing a 70% discount on electricity is not feasible for the larger segment of consumers.
Speaking on a private TV program, Laghari said that the number of consumers using less than 200 units of electricity has increased from 9 million to 21 million. He added that some affluent individuals install solar systems to classify themselves as low-usage consumers, making it difficult for the state to provide heavy subsidies.
The federal minister also noted that under the recent industrial relief measures, the Prime Minister has announced the elimination of cross-subsidies. Electricity rates for industries in Pakistan are now close to those in other regional countries, and claims that electricity costs only 6 to 7 cents per unit in Bangladesh are inaccurate.
