PTA chairman meets Starlink team to discuss launching services in Pakistan

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman, Major General (Retd) Hafeez ur Rehman, recently met with representatives from Starlink, the satellite-based internet service owned by Elon Musk, during the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2025 in Barcelona. The discussions aimed at enhancing affordable broadband access, particularly in underserved regions of Pakistan, to bridge the digital divide and promote digital transformation.

Starlink has completed its registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP). However, it still requires security clearance—a mandatory step before obtaining a PTA license and commencing operations. During the meeting, both parties explored regulatory frameworks and operational strategies to ensure seamless integration of Starlink’s services within Pakistan’s existing telecommunications landscape.

Pakistan, with a population exceeding 240 million, has faced a 40% decline in internet speeds in recent months, attributed to the government’s implementation of a nationwide firewall aimed at blocking malicious content and protecting networks. The potential entry of Starlink could address infrastructure challenges, especially in rural and remote areas, offering high-speed internet access and supporting the country’s digital growth.
