PMDC extends BDS degree duration to five years for global alignment

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has officially extended the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) program from four to five years, bringing it in line with international standards.

The revised structure introduces a fifth year dedicated to clerkship, followed by a mandatory one-year house job. This adjustment ensures that Pakistan’s dental education aligns with global norms, where BDS degrees typically span five years.

The new curriculum will be implemented nationwide beginning in the 2024-25 academic session. The University of Health Sciences (UHS) in Lahore has already adopted this structure, and all universities across the country are now required to implement it.
