Partial restoration of X access in Pakistan following social media restrictions

In Pakistan, some users can now access the social media site X (previously known as Twitter) without the need of VPNs or proxy software thanks to a partial restoration of access. This development follows months of restrictions that began after the February 2024 general elections, during which millions of Pakistanis relied on third-party tools to use the platform.

The timing of this partial restoration coincides with heightened military tensions between Pakistan and India. On May 6, 2025, Indian forces conducted airstrikes on six locations within Pakistan, including Kotli, Bahawalpur, Muzaffarabad, Bagh, and Muridke. In response, Pakistan’s armed forces launched a coordinated retaliation, reportedly shooting down five Indian aircraft.

The easing of access to X may be part of broader efforts to manage public communication and sentiment during this period of increased geopolitical strain.
