Pakistan’s energy minister inaugurates fastest EV charging station in Islamabad

Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Energy, Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, has inaugurated the country’s fastest electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Islamabad. The 120kW station can recharge EVs within 30 to 60 minutes, significantly reducing charging times compared to standard residential chargers.

The government approved the National Electric Vehicles Policy (NEVP) in 2019, aiming for 30% of vehicles to be electric by 2030. Leghari emphasized the government’s commitment to promoting green energy and announced a reduction in electric charging unit costs from Rs71 to Rs39 ($0.14), which is expected to lower transportation expenses and impact the prices of essential commodities.

Earlier this year, Pakistan announced a 45% reduction in power tariffs for EV charging stations and is planning financing schemes for e-bikes and the conversion of two- and three-wheeled petrol vehicles. These initiatives aim to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promote sustainable transportation.
