Pakistan’s Champions Trophy exit draws heavy criticism

Pakistan’s early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy, following a six-wicket loss to India in Dubai, has sparked outrage among former cricketers and fans. Hosting the tournament, Pakistan failed to reach the knockout stage, with India and New Zealand advancing from the group.

The defeat, particularly frustrating as it came in conditions favoring Pakistan, has led to pointed criticism of the team’s performance and selection. Former players like Wasim Akram, Shoaib Akhtar, and Shahid Afridi have openly expressed their disappointment.

Wasim Akram criticized the selection of spinners Khushdil Shah and Salman Ali Agha, calling them unsuited to face world-class batsmen like Virat Kohli. He also highlighted issues with the fast bowling unit, citing the underwhelming performances of Shaheen Afridi, Haris Rauf, and Naseem Shah.

Shoaib Akhtar went further, equating the team’s showing to “club cricket” and calling for better strategic decisions. Afridi noted an imbalance in the squad, stressing the need for better planning and backups for key roles.

Former PCB chairman Ramiz Raja pointed to poor fielding, weak mental resolve, and selfish batting as major concerns. Suggestions have also been made to reconsider captain Mohammad Rizwan’s batting position.

Fans in Lahore echoed these frustrations, with some blaming outdated playing styles that fail to meet modern cricket standards. The team’s early departure from a tournament they co-hosted has left Pakistan’s cricketing future under glaring scrutiny.
