Pakistan’s ambassador Jadoon calls for Ramadan ceasefire in Sudan

Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Usman Jadoon, has called for an immediate ceasefire in Sudan during the holy month of Ramadan, emphasizing the necessity of a political solution to the ongoing conflict that has displaced approximately 12 million people.

The Sudanese civil war, which began in April 2023 due to a power struggle between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has led to a severe humanitarian crisis. Ambassador Jadoon urged all parties to implement an unconditional ceasefire and engage in dialogue for a sustainable political resolution.

He condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure, specifically highlighting the RSF’s assault on the Saudi Teaching Maternal Hospital in El Fasher, which resulted in over 70 deaths. Jadoon also warned against attempts to establish parallel governments in Sudan, stating that such actions could further fragment the nation.

The ambassador called for urgent international action, noting that over 24.6 million people in Sudan face acute food insecurity. He commended the Sudanese government’s efforts to open additional air, sea, and land routes for humanitarian assistance and emphasized the need for full implementation of the Jeddah Declaration on the Protection of Civilians, agreed upon by both warring parties.

Pakistan remains committed to Sudan’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, advocating for a comprehensive and inclusive political process to address the crisis.
