Pakistan urges data-driven disaster planning amid rising climate threats

Dr. Musadiq Malik, Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Climate Change, has emphasised the necessity for a disaster response strategy founded on precise data, community involvement, and regional collaboration in light of the escalating climate challenges confronting the nation. Dr. Malik emphasised the need to shift from reactive tactics to proactive, well-informed planning in his opening remarks at the 2nd Pakistan Expo on Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR-25) in Islamabad.

The event, organized by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), brought together international diplomats, UN officials, humanitarian agencies, and business leaders to explore effective risk reduction frameworks. Dr. Malik highlighted Pakistan’s goal to become a climate-resilient nation by 2030 and noted the launch of the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC) as a key advancement in strengthening national and regional disaster preparedness.

He stressed the importance of inclusive solutions tailored to local cultures and urged for closer cooperation among government agencies, civil society, and international development partners. Acknowledging the role of military and civilian responders in past emergencies, Dr. Malik also appealed to global donors to boost Pakistan’s access to climate financing tools and carbon market mechanisms to support long-term mitigation and adaptation efforts.
