Pakistan reports hack of economic affairs ministry’s X account amid India conflict

On Friday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs disclosed that its official account on X, formerly known as Twitter, had been compromised. This announcement followed a suspicious post on the account, which appeared to solicit international loans as tensions soared with India. The ministry refuted any connection to the post and stated that they were working to deactivate the account.

This cyber incident coincided with escalating hostilities between the two neighbors, who are locked in a worsening conflict. The situation developed after an April 22 attack in Indian-administered Kashmir’s Pahalgam, for which India accused Pakistan. Islamabad denied these claims.

Tensions intensified this week when India carried out missile strikes on areas in Pakistan. In response to these developments, Pakistan asserted that it had successfully downed five Indian fighter jets along with 29 drones of Israeli manufacture. India, on the other hand, claimed it successfully targeted an air defense system in Lahore. Both countries have faced casualties from ongoing cross-border attacks, but the claims made by each side remain unverified.

Powers from around the world have asked their neighbors to keep the peace. The United States and China both called for de-escalation, with China offering support to help mediate. India and Pakistan have a long and tense history, with the disputed Kashmir region at the center of their conflicts. Both nations claim the area in its entirety but manage parts of it separately.
