On April 3, 2025, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a significant reduction in electricity tariffs across Pakistan. Domestic consumers will benefit from a decrease of Rs7.41 per unit, bringing the rate down to Rs34 per unit. Industries’ sector will see a reduction of Rs7.59 per unit.
This initiative addresses the nation’s historically high electricity costs, which have been influenced by reliance on imported fossil fuels, an inefficient energy mix, and regulatory challenges. The government aims to alleviate fiscal pressures and stimulate economic growth through these reforms.
Prime Minister Sharif highlighted the economic challenges faced upon taking office, including the risk of national bankruptcy and initial difficulties in negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). He emphasized the necessity of measures like privatization and organizational restructuring to ensure sustainable economic stability.
These tariff reductions are part of broader efforts to enhance Pakistan’s economic landscape and support both households and industries.
