Pakistan offers electricity relief to low-usage consumers and farmers

Pakistan’s Power Minister, Sardar Awais Ahmad Leghari, has announced a reduction in monthly fuel adjustment charges for households consuming up to 300 units of electricity and for agricultural tubewell users. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial strain caused by previous energy sector reforms that led to significant increases in electricity bills.

The relief, initially withdrawn in 2015 for low-usage consumers and in 2010 for agricultural users, is set to be reinstated following a request to the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA). This move is expected to benefit farmers and households with limited electricity consumption.

Pakistan’s high electricity costs stem from reliance on imported fossil fuels, an inefficient energy mix, and outdated infrastructure. By addressing these issues and reducing charges for vulnerable groups, the government aims to ease the economic burden on its citizens.
