Pakistan has embarked on a significant digital transformation of its civil registration system by launching a nationwide digital birth and death registration system. This initiative, spearheaded by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), aims to streamline the recording of vital life events directly at hospitals and healthcare centres across the country.
The formal agreements to implement this system were signed in Karachi, with key officials including the Sindh Secretary of Health, Secretary of Local Government, and NADRA Sindh Director General Ehtesham Shahid. Sindh’s Minister for Local Government, Saeed Ghani, also attended the ceremony, underscoring the government’s commitment to modernising civil documentation processes.
Under this new system, information on births and deaths will be captured in real-time at the point of occurrence, replacing the traditional manual processes that have often led to delays and inaccuracies. This advancement is expected to ensure timely, accurate, and comprehensive data entry into the national citizen database.
The digital registration system is part of the broader “Udaan Pakistan” programme, which focuses on enhancing economic activity through technological integration. The data collected will play a pivotal role in launching transformative projects such as digital identity services and expanding the digital economy.
Additionally, NADRA is working with the World Bank to advance the “Digital Economy Enhancement Project,” collaborating with other national agencies to better modernise the nation’s vital statistics and civil registration system.
This initiative marks a significant step towards modernising Pakistan’s civil registration system, ensuring that vital life events are accurately recorded and accessible, thereby supporting better governance and planning.
