The Pakistan Football League (PFL) has awarded Muhammad Riaz Rs1 million ($3,573) and a prominent status in the league after a video of him selling jalebis in Hangu went viral.
Riaz, who represented Pakistan in the 2018 Asian Games, started street vending after the previous administration suspended departmental sports. This left Riaz and other sportsmen without institutional support.
PFL Chairman Farhan Junejo called Riaz a great player who represented Pakistan internationally. This talent deserves help to maintain their football enthusiasm, he said.
A franchise league sponsored by UK finance, the PFL intends to elevate Pakistani football from grassroots to professional. Riaz will receive international-standard training, and other outstanding footballers will be supported.
Riaz thanked the PFL for acknowledging his challenges and giving him a chance to play again. He wants to help the league prevent such neglect of players.
