Pakistan cuts fuel prices amid global oil fluctuations

In a bid to offer some financial relief to citizens, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s administration has trimmed fuel prices by Rs2 per liter. The new rates, effective from May 1, 2025, bring petrol down to Rs252.63 and high-speed diesel to Rs256.64 per liter, according to a statement from Pakistan’s Ministry of Finance.

Every two weeks, Pakistan modifies fuel prices in response to changes in the world oil market. The current decrease mirrors a recent dip in international oil prices, and officials say the move is aimed at easing economic pressures on households and the transport sector.

Petrol is primarily used in personal vehicles, motorcycles, and rickshaws, while diesel powers freight trucks and public buses. Fuel costs have remained a sensitive topic in Pakistan, particularly since a major price hike in 2023 linked to a $3 billion IMF bailout. That increase fueled inflation and triggered widespread concern.

The latest price cut is part of the government’s broader economic strategy to stabilize the market and make living costs more manageable for the average citizen.
