Pakistan braces for severe heatwave starting April 13, 2025

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a warning for a significant heatwave expected to affect most parts of the country starting Sunday, April 13, 2025. A high-pressure system is anticipated to dominate the upper atmosphere, leading to elevated temperatures across various regions.

It is predicted that from April 14 to 18, severe heatwave conditions will prevail in southern regions, such as Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan, with daily highs of 6 to 8°C above average. During the same time period, temperatures in central and northern areas, including Islamabad, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan, may be 4 to 6°C higher than usual.

The PMD advises vulnerable groups—children, the elderly, and women—to avoid direct sunlight and stay hydrated. Farmers are encouraged to adjust their agricultural activities, particularly wheat harvesting, and ensure the well-being of their livestock. Additionally, the rising temperatures in northern areas could accelerate snowmelt between April 14 and 18, potentially impacting water flow in rivers and streams.

Authorities are urged to remain vigilant and implement necessary measures to mitigate the effects of the impending heatwave. This alert follows a series of erratic weather patterns in Pakistan, including floods, droughts, and heatwaves, which scientists attribute to climate change.
