Pakistan and China unite to develop Gwadar’s seafood industry

Pakistan and China are set to revolutionize Gwadar’s coastal economy by developing a high-tech aquaculture industry. With its abundant marine resources and strategic location, Gwadar is ideal for large-scale seafood production and export. The initiative emerged from a meeting between China Overseas Ports Holding Company (COPHC) Chairman Yu Bo and Pakistan’s Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry.

COPHC outlined plans for sustainable aquaculture projects, which will farm species such as fish, shrimp, seaweed, and oysters. Minister Chaudhry emphasized that this project could transform the port city into a key seafood production hub, creating jobs and fostering local economic growth.

The Pakistani government has pledged full support to drive investment and technology into the sector. Measures will include the establishment of hatcheries, seafood processing facilities, and sustainable marine farms that meet global standards. With Gwadar’s proximity to international markets and favorable sea conditions, officials believe the city has vast potential for transforming Pakistan’s blue economy.

Both parties agreed to work closely with technical experts and relevant bodies to ensure smooth implementation. The development of the aquaculture sector is expected to boost Pakistan’s seafood exports, enhance food security, and solidify Gwadar’s position as a regional economic center.
