Opposition commits to protecting people’s rights

The top leadership of opposition parties pledged to strengthen coalitions with like-minded political forces to protect the Constitution.

Tehreek Tahafuz Ayin-e-Pakistan (TTAP) chairman Mahmood Achakzai and other opposition figures highlighted at the Karachi Press Club (KPC) “Meet the Press” program that constitutional administration was the only way to tackle Pakistan’s challenges.

PTI leaders Salman Akram Raja, Asad Qaiser, Sajid Tareen, Akhundzada Hussain, Latif Khosa, and SIC president Sahibzada Hamid Raza also attended.

Achakzai questioned prior leadership, “Pakistan is progressing but has had bad governance. We now stand united for constitutional supremacy.”

He said in Pakistan, “those who sell their conscience are deemed loyal, while truth-speakers are labeled as traitors.” He claimed the nation knew PTI won the February 2024 elections.

Salman Akram Raja said the country was mired in chaos and uncertainty. Pakistanis demand democracy and rights. He stated Pakistan needs democracy to survive. Raja further stressed that PTI founder Imran Khan’s recent letters were not for personal relief but about Constitutional compliance.

Khosa criticized Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, and the Punjab police commander for the November 26, 2024 crackdown on PTI demonstrators in Islamabad. He opposed recent PECA revisions and revealed that Chief Justice Yahya Afridi had promised opposition leaders that Imran Khan’s letter had been referred to the Supreme Court’s Constitutional Bench.

SIC chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza blasted the government’s lack of transparency, noting that November 26 CCTV footage had not been disclosed, contradicting crackdown allegations. Former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser blamed improper foreign policy for Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa’s troubles.

PTI representatives thereafter offered Fateha and flowers at Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s mausoleum in Mazar-e-Quaid. Raja told the media that PTI’s politics followed Quaidic values, saying, “Karachi voted for PTI in the past elections, but our mandate was stolen. In Sindh, we shall represent the people.”

Raja promised PTI would support the masses amid Sindh’s water shortages and lawlessness. “In politics, power comes from the people, not institutions,” he said.

Raja replied that opposition leaders had met with the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) to form a partnership. He claimed Sindhis were oppressed by the PPP.

Asad Qaiser said PTI would raise awareness to prevent election rigging. “We demand the immediate release of all our leaders and workers, including Imran Khan,” said.

Advocate Sardar Latif Khosa and PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh also spoke. PTI provincial leaders Dr. Masroor Sial, Raja Azhar, Fahim Khan, Shabbir Qureshi, Sajjad Soomro, and Chaudhry Awais also attended.
