Official summer vacation schedule announced for Punjab schools

The Punjab government has officially announced that summer vacations in schools will start from June 1 — but with a warning that this date could change depending on the heat.

School Education Secretary Khalid Nazir Wattoo said the decision was made with students’ and teachers’ health in mind, as temperatures across the province continue to rise. “If the weather gets unusually hot, we might start the holidays a week earlier,” he explained, adding that the well-being of students, staff, and even parents is the top priority.

This move comes as climate change continues to drive unpredictable and extreme weather around the globe. Pakistan remains one of the countries most vulnerable to its effects, facing frequent heatwaves that are now impacting everything from health and education to daily life.

Meteorologists are already warning that the current season could be harsher than usual. In response, schools have been instructed to take immediate steps to protect students, such as banning outdoor activities, ensuring a steady supply of clean drinking water, encouraging light, breathable clothing, and improving ventilation in classrooms.

Authorities have also been told to set up first-aid counters with staff trained to handle heat-related issues and coordinate closely with district disaster management teams for real-time updates.

Parents and schools are advised to stay alert for any official changes in the schedule as the situation continues to evolve.
