The Punjab government has issued a 90-day ban on using newspapers that contain Quranic verses for wrapping or packaging purposes. The decision, which took effect on May 12, 2025, is aimed at preventing disrespect toward sacred text and maintaining public harmony.
Implemented under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1898, the order seeks to curb practices that could lead to the mishandling of religious content printed in newspapers. Officials warned that continued use of such newspapers for packaging could offend religious sentiments and potentially spark unrest.
The Punjab Home Department has instructed regional police officers, commissioners, and deputy commissioners to firmly implement the prohibition in order to guarantee compliance. The order has been widely circulated through official notifications, newspapers, and electronic media to inform the public.
The move reflects ongoing concerns in Pakistan about the inappropriate disposal and usage of printed Quranic verses, which often appear in newspapers and are later used to wrap food or other items.
