Pakistani fashion designer Maria B has filed a Rs100 million defamation notice against Turkish influencer Türkan Atay, escalating a dispute that started over an alleged payment disagreement.
Atay accused Maria B’s team of not paying her dues after managing production services — including scouting locations, arranging models, and handling videography — for the brand’s 2025 campaign in Turkey. She publicly demanded $8,000 plus an apology, sharing screenshots online that she claimed showed her agreement with the brand’s representatives.
According to Atay, instead of the agreed per-outfit payment, she received a lump-sum amount that didn’t match the initial terms. When she sought clarity, Maria B allegedly distanced herself from the agreement, saying she wasn’t personally involved in the deal.
Feeling wronged, Atay served a legal notice, citing unpaid dues, legal costs, and emotional suffering. In response, Maria B’s legal counsel, led by barrister Khadija Siddiqi, countered with a hefty defamation claim. The notice accused Atay of tarnishing Maria B’s reputation through false and damaging accusations, despite the designer’s noted social contributions, especially her vocal support for Palestine.
Maria B’s team demanded a retraction and apology within 14 days, or they would proceed with further legal action. Meanwhile, Atay maintains that she suffered professional and personal harm due to the incident and warns of additional steps if her claims are not addressed.
The unfolding legal tussle highlights the fragile dynamics between brands, influencers, and the risks of cross-border collaborations amplified by social media.
