On February 25, 2025, Mari Energies, a Pakistani hydrocarbon exploration company, announced the discovery of new oil and gas reserves in the Waziristan district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. The Spinwam-1 exploratory well, drilled on May 28, 2024, revealed an initial flow of 12.96 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas and approximately 20 barrels per day of condensate.
Mari Energies holds a 55% stake in the Waziristan block, in partnership with the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) and Orient Petroleum Inc. (OPI). This discovery is significant for Pakistan, which heavily relies on oil and gas imports and has faced gas shortages due to declining domestic reserves. Further testing is underway to fully assess the well’s potential.
This development aligns with Pakistan’s recent initiatives to attract foreign investment in its energy sector. Petroleum Minister Musadik Malik announced the opening of 40 offshore and 31 onshore blocks for oil and gas exploration, inviting international investors to capitalize on these opportunities. The government aims to reduce energy import costs and address domestic shortages by focusing on indigenization, electrification, and liberalization of the energy sector.
The Spinwam-1 well, reaching a total depth of 4,400 meters, has opened a new play within the Waziristan block, indicating potential for further exploration and development in the region. This discovery not only enhances Pakistan’s energy security but also contributes to the economic development of the northwestern region.
