The Lahore High Court (LHC) has ordered markets in Punjab to close by 8 pm and imposed restrictions on heavy traffic entering Lahore to address the growing smog issue.
During the hearing, Justice Shahid Karim highlighted the significant contribution of trucks and trailers to the region’s smog problem. He directed increased traffic control by the Dolphin police and called for fines of Rs50,000 to be imposed on vehicles emitting excessive smoke.
Justice Karim expressed frustration over the government’s lack of action and suggested stronger measures, including a work-from-home policy, full market closures on Sundays, and nighttime patrols by city officials.
He emphasized that effectively tackling smog would require a long-term commitment, possibly taking up to five years, referencing China’s success with similar efforts.
