On February 27, 2025, the Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) hosted a conference at Wapda House in Lahore to explore the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in water resource planning and management. The event gathered scholars, researchers, and students from institutions such as NUST, GIKI, FAST, UET Lahore, LUMS, COMSATS, UET Taxila, Lahore College for Women University, Punjab University, QUEST Nawabshah, and Mehran University Jamshoro.
Wapda member (water) Jawaid Akhtar Latif emphasized AI’s potential to revolutionize water management in Pakistan, highlighting its capabilities in analysis, prediction, and addressing complex water-related challenges.
The conference featured technical sessions where researchers presented papers on AI applications in hydropower, water resource management, climate change mitigation, groundwater management, and environmental impact assessments. Keynote speakers underscored AI’s role in enhancing decision-making, optimizing dam operations, and promoting sustainable development in the water sector.
This initiative reflects Wapda’s commitment to fostering innovation and collaboration with academia to address Pakistan’s water resource challenges.
