Khunjerab pass opens year-round, boosting China-Pakistan trade

In a landmark development, the Khunjerab Pass—the highest paved international border crossing at approximately 5,000 meters above sea level—has transitioned to year-round operations, significantly enhancing trade between China and Pakistan.

Historically, this critical trade route connecting Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region with China’s Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region remained closed from December to March due to severe winter conditions. The decision to keep the pass open throughout the year underscores both nations’ commitment to strengthening economic ties and facilitating continuous cross-border commerce.

The National Logistics Corporation (NLC) has played a pivotal role in ensuring uninterrupted trade flow, adeptly managing operations despite challenges posed by heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures. Additionally, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has successfully transformed the Karakoram Highway into an all-weather route, further bolstering connectivity between the two countries.

This development is expected to accelerate projects under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), fostering regional integration and economic growth. The continuous operation of Khunjerab Pass not only facilitates trade but also strengthens the longstanding friendship between China and Pakistan, paving the way for deeper collaboration in various sectors.
