Khawaja Asif outlines three key issues for potential talks with India

Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Muhammad Asif, has stated that any future dialogue with India must address three critical issues: the Kashmir dispute, terrorism, and water-sharing concerns. In an interview with Geo News, Asif emphasized that these longstanding matters have been central to the tensions between the two nations for over seven decades.

Highlighting the Kashmir conflict as the core issue, Asif noted that it has been the root cause of most wars between India and Pakistan. He described the recent escalation as a consequence of unresolved Kashmir tensions and stressed the importance of seizing the current opportunity to find a lasting resolution.

On the topic of terrorism, Asif pointed out that Pakistan has been a significant victim over the past 20 to 30 years. He expressed concern over the irony of Pakistan being blamed for terrorism despite its own suffering and losses.

Regarding water disputes, Asif referred to the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, asserting that it remains a binding agreement that cannot be unilaterally suspended. He criticized India’s recent suspension of the treaty following the Pahalgam attack, viewing it as an unjustified act that exacerbates tensions.

Asif praised the Pakistani military’s response to recent hostilities, describing it as a demonstration of strength and preparedness. He claimed that India’s actions have drawn international criticism, leaving it isolated except for support from a few allies. Asif concluded by asserting that if India were to initiate aggression again, global opinion would favor Pakistan.
