Ishaq Dar visits Afghanistan to address security and trade issues

Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, recently made a brief trip to Kabul to engage in high-stakes discussions with Afghan leaders concerning security challenges and economic cooperation between the two neighbors. This visit comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions fueled by accusations of cross-border militancy and the deployment of Afghan refugees from Pakistan.

Dar, hosted by Afghanistan’s Acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, met key Afghan leaders, including Prime Minister Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund and Acting Deputy PM Mullah Abdul Salam Hanafi. During his visit, he emphasized the urgent need to address Pakistan’s security concerns, particularly terrorism, which Islamabad attributes to sanctuaries allegedly provided to the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) within Afghanistan. Kabul, however, has consistently denied these claims.

The discussions were not limited to security. Dar highlighted the untapped potential for economic growth through strengthened trade and investment ties. He stressed the importance of establishing Afghanistan’s partnership to unlock regional connectivity, including rail links with Central Asia. Dar expressed optimism about improving relations despite a period of “coldness” and underscored the mutual benefits of collaboration.

This visit follows Pakistan’s controversial campaign to deport undocumented immigrants, primarily targeting Afghan nationals, which has strained bilateral ties further. However, Dar’s diplomatic outreach signals Islamabad’s intent to revive constructive engagement and explore opportunities for mutual progress.
