IMF starts evaluating Pakistan’s government policies against corruption

In accordance with the loan arrangement, an IMF team is assessing Pakistan’s governance and anti-corruption systems across government ministries.

According to Ministry of Finance sources, the IMF’s Governance and Corruption Diagnostic Assessment began on Monday and will analyze performance, identify gaps, and provide technical help for governance changes in over 30 departments.

The expedition will meet with key officials from the Ministry of Finance, State Bank of Pakistan, FBR, Planning Commission, and Privatization Commission.

The Auditor General of Pakistan, National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA), National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA), and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority will also consult.

Competition dynamics in banking, construction, and sugar will be assessed, along with regulatory efficacy and market openness.

This diagnostic follows the IMF’s February visit, which praised Pakistan’s modest governance and accountability improvements. This visit is a major step toward Pakistan’s economic reform goals.

A full report on the assessment will impact future IMF financial support.
