If resignation addresses security concerns, can step down:Khawaja Asif

On Monday, Defence Minister Khawaja Asif declared he is ready to leave his post should his departure help to address national security concerns.

He said this in response to demands for his resignation stemming from opposition following the fatal terrorist assault on Jaffar Express.

Khawaja Asif admitted he was accountable for the security lapse when speaking to Parliament House media, but he claimed he would be ready to leave should it help to solve the problem.

The opposition has requested the ministers for military, interior, and information to go and blamed the attack on a security breakdown. Asad Qaiser, the PTI leader, attacked Asif for blaming his political enemies instead of owning guilt.

Asif attacked PTI during a National Assembly session, claiming that although the attack was denounced worldwide—including by the United Nations and the United States—the founder of the party did not speak on the tragedy.

The top military leadership is scheduled to inform legislators on the security issues facing the nation on March 18, amid a spike in terrorism incidents including the recent hijacking of the Jaffar Express and increasing violence in Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, it revealed on Sunday.

On advise of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the National Assembly speaker has scheduled a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security for Tuesday at 1:30 pm according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

The security condition of the nation will be the main emphasis of the in-camera session; top military leadership will present a thorough report on changing threats.
