ICC launches support program for displaced Afghan women cricketers

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a new initiative aimed at supporting Afghan women cricketers who were forced to leave their country after the Taliban regained control in 2021. The return of the regime resulted in a blanket ban on women’s participation in sports, leaving many female athletes with no choice but to seek safety abroad.

Partnering with cricket boards from India, England, and Australia, the ICC plans to offer displaced players financial assistance, access to high-quality training, and mentorship programs. The goal is to help these athletes rebuild their cricketing careers despite being far from home.

Jay Shah, ICC Chairman, emphasized the importance of inclusivity in cricket, highlighting that every player deserves a fair chance to grow, regardless of where they come from or what challenges they face.

This comes on the heels of an inspiring exhibition match held in Melbourne earlier this year, where a team of exiled Afghan women cricketers showcased their talent on an international platform—an event supported by the Australian government.

The ICC’s move is being seen as a crucial step toward ensuring that Afghan women in exile can continue pursuing their passion for cricket while also sending a message of hope and resilience to others around the world.
