Yemen’s Huthi rebels have announced they will continue targeting Israeli ships in the Red Sea, despite a recent ceasefire that halted weeks of U.S.-led airstrikes against them.
Speaking to AFP, senior Huthi official Abdulmalik Alejri clarified that the truce does not apply to Israel. “The waterways are safe for all international ships—except Israeli ones,” he said, adding that the agreement only covers American and other international vessels.
The Huthis began attacking ships linked to Israel in November 2023, shortly after the Israel-Hamas war erupted. They later expanded their campaign to include U.S. and British ships following military strikes by those countries in January 2024. Now, Alejri said, their focus will return solely to targeting Israeli vessels, including those with even indirect links to Israel.
The Huthis, backed by Iran and in control of large parts of Yemen, say their actions are part of a broader show of support for Palestinians in Gaza
