Pakistan’s Himalayan salt exports to China hit $1.83 million in the first quarter of 2025, marking a 40% increase from the previous year. Renowned for its striking pink color and health benefits, this salt is mainly sourced from the historic Khewra Salt Mine, one of the largest in the world.
Because of its stellar image as a health-focused, premium product, Himalayan salt has seen a meteoric rise in demand in China. Pakistan exports edible salt, pure sodium chloride, and industrial-grade varieties, with Chinese industries such as food processing, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals driving the demand.
Improved trade relations with China, better logistics, and competitive pricing from Pakistani exporters have played a crucial role in this growth. Experts see the rise in exports as a testament to Pakistan’s competitiveness in global markets and its potential for diversifying trade.
The Khewra Salt Mine produces an estimated 325,000 tons of salt annually and doubles as a popular tourist destination, enhancing its cultural and economic significance. With demand on the rise, Pakistan aims to solidify its role as a leading supplier of premium salt products worldwide.
