Heavy snowfall and avalanches cut off Astore, leaving residents stranded

In recent days, the Astore district of Gilgit-Baltistan has experienced heavy snowfall and avalanches, leading to significant disruptions. Areas such as Burzil Top, Chillum Daskhiram, and Mirmalik have reported snow accumulations of up to six inches. These conditions have rendered roads impassable, severed communication lines, and caused power outages, leaving thousands stranded without access to essential supplies and medical services.

The situation is particularly dire in regions like Manimarg, Gultari, Trishang, and Shankargarh, which have been isolated for several days. An avalanche in Mirmalik Batwash village near Shuntar Pass destroyed a significant portion of a house and a connecting bridge. While residents survived, they lost their home and lifetime savings.

The onset of Ramazan has exacerbated the crisis, with severe food shortages reported. The lack of medical facilities and staff has forced residents to undertake arduous journeys to seek emergency care. For instance, locals have had to carry patients on foot for up to 10 kilometers to reach medical assistance.

Residents are urgently appealing for the establishment of medical camps, helicopter evacuations, and immediate snow clearing operations. They also emphasize the need for sustainable infrastructure development, including reliable roads and permanent hospitals, to ensure access to basic human rights in the Astore region.
