Government Targets 60% Public Sector Trade via Gwadar Port
Minister for Maritime Affairs Qaiser Ahmed Sheikh has announced the government’s plan to route at least 60% of public sector trade through Gwadar Port, aiming to enhance its operational efficiency and economic potential.
In an exclusive interview, the minister highlighted Pakistan’s strategic location and the importance of boosting connectivity through improved road and rail infrastructure. He emphasized that Gwadar Port has the capacity to become a major trade hub, provided that necessary logistical developments are made.
Sheikh further stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is prioritizing the expansion of Gwadar’s trade activities, with a special focus on strengthening the country’s overall logistics network. The government is working on various initiatives to modernize the port, making it more competitive in regional trade.
He also underscored the importance of collaboration with international investors to accelerate port development and improve facilities for cargo handling. Additionally, the minister noted that better infrastructure and streamlined policies would attract more trade and investment, ultimately benefiting Pakistan’s economy.
The move to increase Gwadar’s trade share aligns with the government’s broader vision of positioning Pakistan as a key player in global trade routes, particularly under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). By enhancing Gwadar’s role in public sector trade, Pakistan aims to maximize its maritime potential and create new economic opportunities.
With ongoing efforts to improve efficiency and logistics, Gwadar Port is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Pakistan’s trade and transport sectors.
