French PM Bayrou tackles cabinet clash over hijab ban

French Prime Minister Francois Bayrou is striving to resolve divisions within his cabinet over a contentious issue surrounding the hijab in sports competitions. Currently, individual sports federations in France decide whether women can wear the hijab during events. However, a proposed law seeks to outlaw it entirely in both professional and amateur competitions, a move its proponents argue is essential to upholding France’s secular values.

The debate has caused significant tension in Bayrou’s government, which includes figures from both right-leaning and center-left backgrounds. The Sports Minister and Education Minister have expressed their unease over the legislation, adding to the discord. Adding fuel to the fire, Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin, a conservative and key figure in the cabinet, has threatened to resign if the government compromises on the issue. “I cannot remain in a government that gives in on these issues,” Darmanin stated, reinforcing his stance.

Darmanin, seen by some as a potential successor to President Emmanuel Macron, argues that failing to reassure the public on social issues could bolster far-right leader Marine Le Pen’s chances in the 2027 presidential elections. His comments underscore the high stakes of the debate, not just for the cabinet but for the political future of the country.

The proposed legislation remains a lightning rod, revealing fractures within Bayrou’s administration as it navigates the challenge of balancing individual freedoms and France’s commitment to secularism.
