With a dynamic and inclusive opening ceremony, the 124th Annual Sports Event at Government College University (GCU) Lahore got underway. Two extraordinary female athletes, Noreen Baig, an international footballer, and Muqaddas Fatima, an Asian youth netball champion, presided over the opening ceremony and laid the groundwork for three days of fierce action.
The ceremony kicked off with a moving march-past at the Oval Ground, with physically challenged students leading the way to highlight GCU’s commitment to diversity. With over 10,000 students competing across a wide range of sports, this event is sure to unite the entire campus community.
Notable attendees included Hamza Tariq Sufi, an entrepreneur and Old Ravian. Dean of the Arts and Social Sciences Faculty, Professor Dr. Babar Aziz, spoke on GCU’s long history of athletics, praising the ways in which games teach perseverance, cooperation, and discipline. Hamza Tariq Sufi reiterated his support for events like this one, which aim to develop sports in Pakistan, and he lauded the event’s dedication to exposing talent.
The march-past competition presented the best contingent trophy to the Department of Commerce and Finance, with the Institute of Industrial Biotechnology taking second place. On Sunday, at the closing ceremony, there will be exciting Gymkhana games, including traditional races, girls’ cricket toss balls, and entertaining activities like pillow fights and obstacle courses.
As has always been the case, GCU’s yearly athletic events serve as a platform for the promotion of diversity and school pride while also fostering the development of athletic talent.
