Fawad Khan’s return to Bollywood with Abir Gulaal has hit a roadblock, as Indian authorities have halted the film’s release following the April 22 militant attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead. The tragic incident has triggered political tension, and the Indian government has linked the assault to Pakistan.
The romantic film, helmed by Aarti S. Bagdi and featuring Vaani Kapoor alongside Fawad Khan, was originally set to hit cinemas on May 9. Reports suggest the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has denied the necessary clearance for distribution.
The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and Shiv Sena, both known for their strong nationalist stances, have also opposed the film. MNS leader Ameya Khopkar warned of consequences if the film is released in Maharashtra, while Shiv Sena member Sanjay Nirupam echoed public outrage over Pakistani involvement in Indian cinema.
“Khudaya Ishq” and “Angrezi Rang Rasiya,” two songs from the film’s album, have been removed off YouTube India in response to growing pressure.
Ridhi Dogra, who is part of the film’s ensemble cast, defended her role by stating she took legal advice beforehand and ensured no restrictions existed regarding Pakistani collaborators. She emphasized that her decision was based on legality, not politics.
Fawad Khan, who last starred in Ae Dil Hai Mushkil in 2016, expressed grief over the Pahalgam tragedy and extended condolences to the victims’ families. He also apologized to fans for his extended absence, attributing it to circumstances beyond his control.
The incident illustrates how quickly cultural bridges between India and Pakistan can crumble under the weight of political strife, affecting even neutral platforms like cinema.
