The European Union (EU) mission in Pakistan has announced plans to organize a business and investment forum in Islamabad this year, in collaboration with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. The forum aims to expand economic ties between Pakistan and the EU by fostering a favourable business environment for European investors in the country.
During a meeting between Aurangzeb and EU Ambassador Riina Kionka, discussions highlighted Pakistan’s potential to attract international businesses. Ambassador Kionka revealed plans for the forum, emphasizing the EU’s interest in exploring Pakistan’s rapidly growing investment opportunities. She also mentioned that over 300 European companies currently operate in the country and expressed confidence in Pakistan’s capacity to host more.
Aurangzeb thanked the EU for its continued support, particularly the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) program that facilitates duty-free access for Pakistani exports to Europe. He stressed the importance of maintaining the GSP+ status, which is vital for boosting economic growth in Pakistan.
“Our focus is on creating a sustainable trade and investment climate while improving relations with European economies,” Aurangzeb stated. He also committed to ensuring that European businesses face minimal obstacles in operations or profit repatriation.
The forum will attract stakeholders from both sides to discuss strategies for solidifying trade links and tapping into untapped opportunities. With Pakistan’s $7 billion International Monetary Fund support program underway, this initiative is a step toward reviving the country’s economy while bolstering its global partnerships.
