Survey Reveals Majority of Pakistani Youth Unwilling to Leave Country Permanently

A recent survey conducted by Ipsos Pakistan highlights that a significant majority of Pakistani youth, 74%, are not willing to leave the country permanently. This survey, which included over 1,600 participants aged between 18 to 34 years, was carried out from September 20 to 27, 2024.

When asked whether they considered leaving Pakistan to settle abroad permanently, the majority of respondents expressed their intention to stay in Pakistan and contribute to the nation’s progress. Meanwhile, 26% of participants revealed that they would consider moving abroad if given the opportunity.

Among those willing to migrate, the Middle East emerged as the most favored destination. Thirty percent of respondents expressed a preference for Saudi Arabia, followed by 20% choosing Dubai. Other popular destinations included the United Kingdom (9%), Canada (8%), the United States (8%), Europe (5%), Australia (3%), Turkey (2%), Qatar (2%), Italy (2%), and Germany (1%).

The survey also revealed demographic variations among respondents inclined toward emigration. A significant proportion of those wanting to leave belonged to Islamabad and the privileged class. Nearly 46% of youth from Islamabad expressed a desire to relocate, compared to 35% from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 27% from Punjab, 21% from Balochistan, and 20% from Sindh.

Class dynamics also played a role, as 36% of upper-middle-class respondents showed an interest in permanent migration, compared to 28% from the middle class and 23% from the underprivileged class.

This survey underscores the deep connection most Pakistani youth feel toward their homeland, despite the challenges, while highlighting emigration trends among certain demographics.
