ECP appointment delays challenged in IHC

Opposition leaders in the National Assembly and Senate petitioned the Islamabad High Court (IHC) to expedite the appointment of the new CEC and two ECP members.

Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub asked the court to order the federal government to negotiate with the opposition on the new CEC and two ECP members.

Sindh and Balochistan ECP members and CEC Sikandar Sultan Raja have concluded their tenure. A petition in the IHC asked the court to remove them from office.

Delaying these appointments violated the Constitution because the prime minister, National Assembly speaker, and Senate chairman had failed to fulfill their constitutional duties, according to National Assembly opposition leader Ayub and Senate opposition leader Faraz.

The petition demanded that the court order the speaker to form a parliamentary committee, the chairman to submit the speaker the names of Senators, and the prime minister to consult with the opposition leader under Article 213 of the Constitution.
