BYD and Pakistan collaborate to build nation’s largest EV charging network

Chinese electric vehicle giant BYD is joining forces with Pakistan’s Mega Motor Company and the Hub Power Company (HUBCO) to develop the country’s most expansive network of EV charging stations. This move is aimed at bolstering Pakistan’s transition to greener transportation, with an official target of electrifying 30% of all vehicles by 2030 under its National Electric Vehicles Policy.

The joint venture is set to roll out 128 high-speed DC charging points over the next three years, with 50 to be up and running by the end of 2025. These stations will be positioned strategically along major motorways and within cities—covering high-traffic areas like malls, hotels, and hospitals—to ensure convenient access for EV users and reduce the fear of running out of charge mid-journey.

Danish Khaliq, heading sales and strategy at BYD Pakistan, emphasized that the project goes beyond building infrastructure; it’s about reshaping the way people move in the country. This collaboration builds on an existing partnership between BYD and MMC to introduce electric vehicles and stimulate the local EV ecosystem.

In recent months, Pakistan has accelerated its green mobility efforts. A fast-charging station was launched in Islamabad, and the government has slashed electricity tariffs for EV charging by 45%. Incentives are also on the table for financing electric motorcycles and converting older petrol-driven two- and three-wheelers, which currently dominate the roads and consume over $5 billion in fuel each year.

The initiative is seen as a leap forward in reducing emissions, cutting fuel costs, and encouraging environmentally friendly transport options.
