Arshad Nadeem chooses Asian Championship over India invite

Arshad Nadeem, a Pakistani athlete who won the gold medal at the Olympics, has graciously turned down an invitation to compete in the May 24 Bengaluru Classic Throwing Championship in India. The invite, extended by India’s star javelin thrower and Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra, was seen as a potential symbol of regional sportsmanship. However, Nadeem remains laser-focused on representing Pakistan at the 26th Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea, taking place from May 27 to 31.

The 28-year-old athlete made headlines during the Paris 2024 Olympics, where he delivered a remarkable 92.97-meter throw, clinching Pakistan’s first-ever Olympic gold in track and field. His performance not only broke national records but also brought immense pride to the country, ending a long-standing medal drought.

Speaking to local media, Nadeem appreciated Chopra’s gesture but emphasized the importance of prioritizing his preparation and peak performance for the Asian Championships. His decision underscores a growing rivalry and mutual respect between the two South Asian athletes, who have often shared the podium in recent years.

The Athletics Federation of Pakistan has also backed Nadeem’s move, calling it a strategic step toward greater international success. As he trains under a rigorous regimen, Nadeem hopes to build on his Olympic success and bring home more glory from the continental event.
