Pakistani women cricketers face earnings below minimum wage

In March 2025, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced domestic contracts for 90 women cricketers for the 2024-25 season, encompassing 18 U-19 players, 62 emerging category players, and 10 capped players. Despite this initiative, the monthly retainers for these athletes reportedly fall below the national minimum wage of Rs 37,000 set for unskilled laborers.

Furthermore, match fees have remained unchanged from the previous year, failing to account for recent inflation. This situation persists even as the PCB projects a profit of Rs 3 billion from hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and reports a record profit of Rs 10 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year.

The disparity highlights ongoing challenges in achieving pay equity within Pakistani cricket, underscoring the need for continued efforts to support and fairly compensate women athletes.
